This idyllic high-desert city, with a population close to 90,000, nestles beneath the snowcapped 12,000-foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The rambling Spanish-Pueblo Revival home of gay poet Witter Bynner - now the wonderfully inviting Inn of the Turquoise Bear - hosted countless luminaries over the years, including such queer notables as Thornton Wilder, Georgia O'Keeffe, Errol Flynn and Christopher Isherwood.
